Theater Erfurt 2013

Our trip to the theatre in Erfurt

On Monday 25th, November 2013, we went by bus to Erfurt to see the play “A Christmas Carol”, written by Charles Dickens in 1843.

The story is about a mean man, named Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by three ghosts. They take him into the past, the present, and the future. In the past, the ghost shows him how he became the mean person he is today. When he is taken into the present, the ghost shows him the family of his employee, Bob Cratchit, and how poor they are. Bob Cratchit, the father, has got a son who is crippled. The Cratchit family has no money and can’t pay a good doctor for their very sick son, Tiny Tim. Then, the third ghost, who resembles the Grim Reaper, appears. Finally, it takes Scrooge into the future to show him when he dies, there will be no one who will come to his funeral.  There will even be people who are glad about his death and who steel his belongings to make money.  Scrooge then realizes that he has to change, otherwise he will have to wear chains like his dead business partner, Jacob Marley, and he will be doomed forever.  The next day, Scrooge sends a turkey to his employee, Bob Cratchit, and he goes to his nephew’s Christmas dinner where he was invited.           We liked this play, because it was fun to see and the actors performed it very well. It was actually easy to understand, because they spoke clearly. Before we went to Erfurt, our exchange student from the USA gave us a presentation on “A Christmas Carol”. It was definitely worth seeing!

A Christmas Carol
