Biology in a different way

Bilingual lessons in form 9 and  10 are new this year to Grammar Schools in Thüringia. In every school year, students will now have to be taught 25 lessons in a different language. This is the first year, and our bilingual days were set in English.  We were allowed to choose from three different subjects, biology, geography and social studies.  We had two days this week (17.3.2014-18.3.2014) and will have three more days again in the summer (14.7.2014-16.7-2014).  During the two days we were taught, we learned many things.  Students in social studies learned more about „The Circulation of Money“ students in geography got to know about „The States of the USA“ and the students in biology learned interesting facts about „The Microscope and Cells“.  We chose the subject of biology.  After a short introduction from Mrs. Kämnitz and Mrs. Bergleiter, Amelia Taylor,  an American Exchange student, presented the parts and the functions of the microscope and how to use it.  After that, we began to work at different stations.  These included theoretical tasks for example, talking about the construction of a leaf cell and also practical work, like looking at our cheek cells under the microscope at a magnification of 600x.  Moreover, there were lots of creative challenges such as, making a quiz, building a model of a plant cell, or creating a domino game.  The results were great! It was an interesting experience and we can't wait till the next three bilingual days in July.
