A Trip to Erfurt

On Thursday 11th of December 2014 the forms 9a, b, c went by bus to Erfurt. We were accompanied by our form teachers Mrs Treppschuh, Mrs Roßmeier, Mrs Greiner and by our English teacher Mrs Brand. We were picked up at the gym and the bus took us in less than an hour there.

After we had arrived near the dome, we went to the Christmas Market. We had fun at the Ferris wheel or the bumper car, we ate and drank something and bought some Christmas presents.                                                                                     Then we went to the new Opera House of Erfurt to watch the theatre play. The “American Drama Group Europe” showed us “A Christmas Carol” written by Charles Dickens in 1843. There were only 8 actors for the whole play but it was very good. The carol tells the story of the old man Ebenezer Scrooge. He is mean, very rich and thinks Christmas is humbug. He is the main character of the story. The story begins with the words that Mr. Marley is dead. He was the former partner of Ebenezer Scrooge. Then the first scene shows the office where his clerk Bob Cratchit is working in even on Christmas Eve. Scrooge says to different people that Christmas is humbug and goes home. At night he is visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley who is completely wrapped in endless iron chains. He wears the chains he had made in his life. So Marley comes to give him a chance to change his ways and to avoid becoming a tortured soul as well. Three spirits will appear and show him shadows of Christmas that night.                                                                                                                                                             The first spirit, the ghost of Christmas Past, takes him to his unhappy childhood where his sister brought him home, then he is shown Christmas with his old master and the woman he loved, and how he let her go. After that he gets home and goes to bed again. The ghost of Christmas Present shows him his nephew Fred who is playing games, laughing about his uncle and having fun together with his wife and their friends. Then they go to the Cratchit`s family and watch them celebrating Christmas. Bob Cratchit´s crippled son Tiny Tim touches Scrooge’s heart, wishing everyone a merry Christmas.  Then he is home again and goes asleep for the last time this night. The last visitor is the spirit of Christmas Yet to Come, this spirit does not talk to Scrooge, only shows him shadows that makes him spooky. He shows him his future where he sees his body lying on his bed, hears people discussing his death and he is shown his own gravestone.                                                                               That shocks him that much that he finally changes completely. When he wakes up, he is another person. He donates money to the poor, sends a big turkey to the Cratchit family, goes to have dinner with Fred`s family and becomes a second father to Tiny Tim. He does many good things and   becomes a true and happy Christian gentleman.                                                                                                                                           I love this story, it`s perfect for Christmas. I appreciate the change of a mean and wicked person with a happy ending. After the theatre performance we went home by bus and for me that was an awesome day I will not forget so fast. I want to end with Tim`s words: ‘A merry Christmas and God bless us every one!’
